What this test measures

  • Total testosterone

All the testosterone in your blood, including the part that's bound up and not being used.

  • Free testosterone

The small unbound fraction your body can use right away.

  • Bioavailable testosterone

Free testosterone plus the part that's only loosely bound — the portion that's usable.

How to prepare

  • Get your blood drawn between 7 and 10 a.m. Testosterone is highest in the morning, and a later draw can read low.
  • Fasting isn't required for this test. If you add a test that needs fasting, it's marked in your cart.

Why total testosterone alone isn't the full picture

Most testosterone in your blood is bound to a protein called SHBG and isn't available to your body. Two men can have the same total number and very different free levels.

That's why this test reports all three numbers — total, free and bioavailable — instead of the single total most routine checkups stop at.

Why men check it

Common reasons: lower energy than usual, lower drive, a harder time recovering from workouts, or just wanting a baseline number to track over time.

Testosterone also changes with age, sleep, weight and stress, so one result is most useful as a starting point. Checking again in a few months shows which direction it's moving.

The Men's Hormone Health panel includes free, bioavailable and total testosterone plus estradiol, FSH & LH, prolactin, PSA, cholesterol, A1c, a metabolic panel and a CBC — all from one draw.

Commonly added

The $10 lab service fee is charged once per order, so add-ons are just the test price — same draw, same visit.

  • Sex Hormone Binding Globulin (SHBG)

    $11

A protein made by the liver that binds sex hormones and carries them through the blood. Hormone bound to SHBG is held in reserve; only the unbound portion is active.

  • Estradiol, Ultrasensitive (Males)

    $34

The same hormone, measured by a method sensitive enough to be accurate at the much lower concentrations typically found in men.

  • PSA, Free & Total

    $17

A protein made by the prostate, measured both as a total and as the proportion circulating unbound. Some always appears in blood; the amount reflects prostate size and activity.

  • Hemoglobin A1c

    $7

When there's sugar in your blood, some of it attaches to the hemoglobin inside your red blood cells and stays there for the life of the cell. A1c measures what percentage has sugar attached.

Common questions

Is this the same test a doctor's office would order?
Yes. It's the same Quest Diagnostics testosterone test (free, bioavailable and total), run in the same CLIA-certified labs.
What time of day should I get tested?
Between 7 and 10 a.m. Testosterone peaks in the morning, so that's the window results are read against.
Do I need a doctor's visit or referral?
No. An independent licensed physician authorizes the lab order as part of checkout. There's no appointment and no referral.
Where do I get my blood drawn?
At any Quest Diagnostics location. Your lab order arrives by email a few minutes after checkout — walk in, or book a time if you prefer. Not available in New York, New Jersey or Rhode Island.
What does it cost in total?
The test price plus a flat $10 lab service fee per order, which covers your blood draw and the physician-authorized order. The fee is charged once, no matter how many tests you add.
Can I use my HSA or FSA card?
Yes. HSA/FSA cards are accepted.
Do you take insurance?
No. Prices are cash prices, shown upfront before you check out.
When do I get my results?
Usually in about a week. We email you when they're ready (the email never includes your results), and they show up in your Priority One dashboard.
Will a doctor go over my results with me?
No. Your results go straight to your dashboard. Take them to your own healthcare provider to talk through what they mean for you.
What if I change my mind?
You can get a full refund any time before your blood is drawn.
